Dropped from Agra, SC panel chief Ram Shankar Katheria to contest from Etawah

Agra: National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) chairman and sitting MP from Agra Ram Shankar Katheria will contest Lok Sabha elections from his home constituency Etawah. Katheria has represented Agra twice in 2009 and 2014.According to insiders, BJP MLAs and party workers in Agra were not in favour of Katheria’s re-nomination. However, sitting MP Ashok Kumar Dohre is from BJP. Dohre had defeated Samajwadi Party’s candidate Premdas Katheria by 1.72 lakh votes in the last Lok Sabha polls. However, the party could not afford to ignore him as he is one of the most prominent Dalit faces of BJP.Interestingly, SP Singh Baghel, who replaced Katheria, was one of his vocal critics.

Agra: National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) chairman and sitting MP from Agra Ram Shankar Katheria will contest Lok Sabha elections from his home constituency Etawah. The BJP declared his name in the 10th list of candidates that was released on Tuesday.Katheria was among the six sitting MPs, who were denied ticket in the first list of 184 candidates announced by the BJP on March 21. This had led to speculations around Katheria’s future, as he was replaced by UP cabinet minister SP Singh Baghel.Talking to TOI, Katheria said that Etawah is his “Janmabhoomi” (birth place) and now it will be his “Karmabhoomi” (work place) too. He said his focus will be to make the people aware about the PM’s work during the past five years and win the seat to ensure Modi’s second term as PM.On his name being dropped from the first list, Katheria said, “Whatever happens always happens for the good.” He added that he is a “sevak” and he is ready to work wherever the party desires. Katheria has represented Agra twice in 2009 and 2014.According to insiders, BJP MLAs and party workers in Agra were not in favour of Katheria’s re-nomination. However, the party could not afford to ignore him as he is one of the most prominent Dalit faces of BJP.Interestingly, SP Singh Baghel, who replaced Katheria, was one of his vocal critics. Fatehpur Sikri MP, Chaudhary Babulal, who has also been denied ticket had alleged that Katheria had sidelined him and other leaders of the party in order to keep himself supreme.Etawah is a reserved constituency and this has been the turf of Samajwadi Party. However, sitting MP Ashok Kumar Dohre is from BJP. Dohre had defeated Samajwadi Party’s candidate Premdas Katheria by 1.72 lakh votes in the last Lok Sabha polls.
