2 candidates drop out poll race in Agra, one in Sikri

Two candidates withdrew their papers from Agra seat and one from Fatehpur Sikri. Agra: Three candidates withdraw their papers from Agra and Fatehpur Sikri seats on Friday, the last day of nomination process for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections. With their withdrawal, nine candidates will contest elections from Agra seat and 15 from Fatehpur Sikri seat, according to the final list released by the district election office. Of the 24 candidates in the fray at these two Lok Sabha seats, eight are independents. Polls will be held on April 18.Two independent candidates — Kuldeep Singh and Vimal Kumar — withdrew their candidature from Agra seat while Bengali Ram Kushwah of Mahanwadi Party dropped out from the poll race in Fatehpur Sikri.Withdrawal of one nomination on Fatehpur Sikri seat came as a relief for district administration as now only one electronic voting machine (EVM) will be required to conduct the elections. One EVM has 16 options, including NOTA.During scrutiny, a total of 16 nominations forms on both seats were rejected.In Agra, the contest is likely to be three-cornered between BJP nominee SP Singh Baghel, BSP-SP-RLD coalition’s candidate Manoj Kumar Soni and Congress nominee Preeta Harit. For the Fatehpur Sikri seat, BJP’s Rajkumar Chahar will take on Congress’ Raj Babbar and coalition candidate Shribhagwan Sharma.District election officer, who is also the DM, NG Ravi Kumar said, “The nomination process has been completed. Of the 24 candidates in the fray at these two Lok Sabha seats, eight are independents. Symbols have been allotted to all the candidates.“This time advanced M-3 (third generation) EVMs will be used for the elections. The ballot paper, for the first time, will carry pictures of all the candidates. Besides their names and symbol. All the polling booths will also have voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines.As many as 21,000 employees — 17,000 men and 4,000 women — have been assigned poll duties. Besides 600 micro observers, 411 sector magistrates and 77 zonal magistrates have been assigned responsibility for fair and peaceful voting at 3,778 polling booths in the district.
