Agra homestay employee thrashed & raped, 5 held

AGRA: Five people were arrested by Agra police on Monday for allegedly brutally thrashing and raping a 25-year-old woman at a homestay in the citys Tajganj locality. In a purported video that has surfaced on social media, the woman, who worked at the homestay, can be heard saying, "Please help me", even as a man can be seen dragging her into a room. The clip also shows her lying on the floor, alleging "torture" by the men.The survivor also claimed that she had been "blackmailed over an objectionable video".Agra assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Archana Singh said on Monday, "On Saturday night, Tajganj police received a call that a woman had been assaulted and raped in a homestay. According to the complaint filed by the survivor, a case has been lodged under IPC Sections 376-D (gang-rape), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), among others, along with Sections 7 and 8 of The Immoral Traffic Prevention Act against the accused." Singh added that five people, including a woman, have been arrested and the FIR was registered on the basis of the womans complaint.A police officer privy to case details said the woman was thrashed when she protested. "She then raised an alarm and a video of her crying profusely was widely circulated." The arrested men have been sent to jail and further investigation is being conducted, he added.In her police complaint, the woman said, "They (the accused) have been harassing me for over a year. They called me two days ago for Diwali sweets. On reaching there, apart from Jitendra alias Jeetu (owner of homestay), there were others - Sonu, Manish, Ravi, Chhota alias Dev Kishore, Riya, Ashok and two unknown persons - also present. They said that two customers were waiting and they would give me Rs 5,000."She added: "I was then locked in a room with a customer. That unknown man sexually assaulted me. The others then forced me to drink alcohol and said that Ill have to stay there for the night... They also attacked me and hit a glass bottle on my head. When I raised an alarm, people from nearby came and informed the police."(The victims identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
