AGRA: A fresh row has erupted in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) with its students' body, AMUSU , refusing to accept the university's decision to suspend a student, Mohd Ravish, in connection with the alleged incident of misbehaviour of some students with an orthopaedic doctor of JN Medical College on April 23.Though the suspension was ordered on the recommendation of the three-member committee formed by the university to inquire into the April 23 incident that had led to a strike by the hospital's resident doctors, Aligarh Muslim University Student Union (AMUSU) has dubbed the move as unfair and biased. The student leaders attempted to meet the university proctor to discuss the matter on Thursday night but when he refused to give them an audience, agitated students took away keys of several official vehicles of the university, rendering them immovable.Talking to TOI, Nadeem Ansari, vice president of AMUSU, said the union would not accept Ravish's suspension under any circumstances, as he was not involved in the altercation in any manner. Claiming that the committee formed by the university to inquire into the incident had people with "dubious" reputation on it, Ansari said the entire inquiry is a sham.He said they had written a letter to the Prime Minister regarding the illegal strike by Junior Doctors' of JN Medical College, following the April 23 incident, and requested his intervention. He said the union has demanded strong punitive action against the doctors and demanded imposition of ESMA (Essential Service Management Act) on the office bearers of Resident Doctors Association (RDA), as their adamant attitude is adversely affecting the general public. They claimed that the "illegal" strike by the RDA has led to death of at least 10 patients in the last three days as reported in local media. JNU caters to the need of thousands of patients every day from Aligarh and nearby districts of West UP. Ansari also accepted that the union members had taken away keys of five vehicles of the university, after the proctor refused to hear their side of the story. He said the keys won't be returned till the authorities give them a fair hearing. When contacted, Mohd Mohsin Khan , Proctor of AMU, said that he had been informed that the students had taken away keys of official vehicles and he had apprised the VC about it. He said strict action would be taken against the students.University sources revealed that the report submitted by the three-member committee had clearly stated that Mohd Ravish had physically assaulted Dr Mohammad Saad, JR-I (Orthopedic). "Prima facie it has been established that the student committed act of indiscipline and misconduct as per AMU Students' conduct and discipline rule, 1985", they said. Meanwhile the strike by the RDA entered sixth day. The medicos have been staying away from work since the alleged incident on April 23.
