Agra: Alarmed by the poor recovery rate of e-challan fines from traffic violators on the Yamuna Expressway, the transport department said owners of vehicles exceeding the speed limit will be sent notices to their homes. One is legally allowed to press the accelerator up to 100km/hr on the expressway. The department has reported that 95% of overspeeding cases concern four-wheelers, while 3% are two-wheelers and 2% are buses and trucks in the 165 km long e-way which connects Greater Noida with Agra. Even though 109 challans were issued in June, officials claimed the number of violators is likely to be much higher with many never turning up to pay the e-challans. Also, cameras installed to check cases of overspeeding fail frequently which makes it difficult for police officials to prosecute defaulters.“We have tied up with the toll tax officials to provide us the complete list of speeders. Once the list is received we can find addresses of the vehicle owners and send them notices to pay their fines at the transport office within a stipulated time,” said Anil Kumar, regional transport officer (RTO) (enforcement).Transport department sources also said that the maximum cases of traffic violators on the e-way are private vehicles. “In cases of rash and negligent driving, including drunken driving and taking wrong side of the road, a fine of Rs 500 is slapped and offenders are charged under section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. In cases where drivers are found to be exceeding the speed limit only, Rs 300 is charged,” Kumar added. The proposal was floated in the first week of July. “We have received the complete list of offenders from the toll tax department and collected defaulters’ addresses. But we are yet to finish compilation of the total number of speeders. Notices will be sent to them in the coming two days,” added Kumar. The defaulters will have to deposit fines at the transport department. In cases where vehicles are registered outside the vicinity of Agra district, the transport department will contact their counterpart in the region where the vehicle is registered so that violators can deposit fines at the local office,” said another official, who did not wish to be named.
