Officials begin preparations for civic body elections to be held in November

Several councilors opposed it by claiming errors which were introduced by civic body officials. According to AMC officials, the plan for delimitation of municipal wards has been forwarded to the state government for its final approval. The 2017 civic body elections will take place as per the new delimitation of wards which was done on the basis of the 2011 census.AMC had 90 wards in the previous elections that took in 2012. A senior AMC official, who did not wish to be named, said the elections in Agra city are likely to be held on 100 wards.

According to AMC officials, the plan for delimitation of municipal wards has been forwarded to the state government for its final approval. The nagar panchayats and nagar palikas will also declare their ward-wise demarcation plan soon. The 2017 civic body elections will take place as per the new delimitation of wards which was done on the basis of the 2011 census.AMC had 90 wards in the previous elections that took in 2012. A senior AMC official, who did not wish to be named, said the elections in Agra city are likely to be held on 100 wards. A rapid survey was also conducted recently to determine the reservation status of wards. The state government will take a final decision regarding reservation of seats.“There is one municipal corporation, seven nagar panchayats and five nagar palika parishads in Agra district. Delimitation of wards in all local bodies has been completed. We have increased the work pace of rapid survey to determine reservation status of wards after getting confirmation about the elections,” said Ramdas, election in-charge, local body polls.The delimitation of wards was completed earlier this year during the tenure of the then municipal commissioner Indravikram Singh. But questions were soon raised about the restructuring of wards. Several councilors opposed it by claiming errors which were introduced by civic body officials. Objections were also raised against the rapid survey which was earlier done on the basis of the previous delimitation.According to official sources, the post of mayor which was reserved for a scheduled caste candidate is likely to be a changed to a general category this time. Besides, status of various reserved wards are also slated to change, informed officials.
