AMU to make "Dalit" and "tribal" discourse part of its optional curriculum

AGRA: The Hindi department of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has planned to introduce "Dalit" and "tribal" discourse in their curriculum from next academic session. The region is considered as one of most culturally diverse regions of the world, with the habitation of more than 200 fascinating tribes and many have rich literature. India's northeast region, comprising eight states, is one of the most colourful and culturally rich communities of India. Tribals make up 27 to 28 percent of the northeast region's total population of around 45.58 million, he said.While, Dalit literature would include issues of their exploitation and their quest for equality and a rational attitude towards the problems of society. New things should be merged in it.

The aim of introducing these discourse is to generate awareness on the socio-economic, political and cultural issues pertaining to them.Talking to TOI, Chairman of Hindi department at AMU, Prof Abdul Alim said that literature should not be restricted to only Kabir, Tulsidas and Surdas. New things should be merged in it. He said that literature is a reflection of the society and the popularity of Dalit and tribal literature has increased over the time hence it's time to introduce them in AMU curriculum.This discourse will probably be introduced in the third or the fourth semester as, an "optional" subject so that student can opt for them as per their liking.Giving details about the curriculum, Alim said that tribal's life and issues confronting them will be the part of curriculum.
