Now, wife of AMU PRO alleges torture by husband

Agra: Close on the heels of registration of cases of harassment under Domestic Violence Act and under Dowry Prohibition Act against an Aligarh Muslim University prof Khalid Bin Yusuf Khan, another varsity official, Omar Peerzada, is in the dock, as his wife has accused him of "mentally and physically" harassing him for dowry. She also alleged that Peerzada had “deprived” her and their two children of everything and was making life difficult for them.Talking to TOI, Saleha said she had filed a police complaint in June but no action was taken on it because her husband wields immense clout. When contacted, Aligarh senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rajesh Pandey said he was aware of the complaint and that he had already recommended that an FIR against Omar be registered soon.Saleha alleged that Omar started abusing and harassing her right after their marriage in October 2012. “He has been demanding dowry since our marriage, but my parents could not meet all his demands,” said Saleha, adding that Peerzada had forcibly sent her and their children to her parent’s house. “We have been staying at my parents' house since December; he (Peerzada) has not given us any maintenance all these months,” said Saleha.She alleged that Omar had threatened to “eliminate” her parents for not being able to meet his dowry demands. She also claimed in her police complaint that her husband had even threatened her with dire consequences if she approached police or lodged any complaint against him.Saleha said that she finally gathered courage and filed a police complaint against Peerzada in June. “Instead of registering my complaint, they (police) sent us for counselling,” said Saleha, adding that she has been pursuing her complaint for the past four months.
