Independent candidates win more seats in Agra as compared to major political parties

Agra: Independent candidates may rarely win parliament and legislative assembly election but in civic body election they defeat candidates of Major political parties. Out of these many candidates refused ticket of major political party and preferred to contest election as an independent candidate. Personal identity and local connect of the candidate matters more than backing of major political party. This time in the district more than 300 independent candidates are in contest for post of ward councilor. On all these wards candidates fielded by BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party were also in contest but independent candidates won election with difference of major vote percentages.

Agra: Independent candidates may rarely win parliament and legislative assembly election but in civic body election they defeat candidates of Major political parties. In last two municipal corporation election of Agra, independent candidates won up to half of the total wards in the city.However this time all major political parties are using their symbol in civic body election and senior leaders have done extensive campaign for candidates of their party, due to this independent candidates have faced tough challenge.According to sources, voters generally do not get attracted to policies of major political parties in civic body election. Personal identity and local connect of the candidate matters more than backing of major political party. This has been proved repeated in municipal corporation election of Agra.As per the records, if 2006 civic body elections are concerned there were 90 municipal wards in the city. Independent candidates had contested election on all seats. People of 36 wards had elected an independent candidate. On all these wards candidates fielded by BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party were also in contest but independent candidates won election with difference of major vote percentages. On the other side independent candidates won majority of the seats of seats in elections on 6 Nagar Panchayats and 5 Nagar Palika Parishads of the district.In civic body election 2012, independent candidates registered victory in 45 municipal wards out of total 90. This time in the district more than 300 independent candidates are in contest for post of ward councilor. Out of these many candidates refused ticket of major political party and preferred to contest election as an independent candidate.
