Citizens are not fools: Justin Trudeau

  • | Tuesday | 20th February, 2018

We should deal with our citizens as intelligent, reasonable folks instead of dividing them into vote-banks. When Trudeau was asked to name an Indian leader who inspired him, he was quick enough to take Gandhi's name. On a gender-balanced cabinet, he said: "Every society faces challenges of representation. I am the leader of a gender-balanced cabinet, but my own political party has about 26 female representatives. During his session at IIMA, Trudeau also spoke about refugees, women empowerment, gender-balanced cabinet and similarities between him and United States President Donald Trump.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau believes no citizen is a fool. Speaking at Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, he said, with regard to dynasty politics, he had a certain edge over others, since people have seen him grow up. Addressing over 500 students, he said, "They are not fools; they can tell if someone is genuine in their approach or is just trying to live up to some lofty familial expectation. For me, all my life, I focused on how I could make a difference. My decision to join politics has nothing to do with my father." During his session at IIMA, Trudeau also spoke about refugees, women empowerment, gender-balanced cabinet and similarities between him and United States President Donald Trump. On women empowerment, he said: "Empowering women is the smartest thing to do. We are yet not giving women enough opportunities to grow. We have a pay equity legislation that ensures that women and men receive equal pay. Speaking about sexism, Trudeau said, "Any comments about how a man looks isn't even close to the systemic discrimination women face." The Canadian PM mentioned that he always emphasised on how similar he and Donald Trump are in their approach towards the future. Both work for the upliftment of the middle class and how the policies of both have worked very well for Canadian and American economies. On a gender-balanced cabinet, he said: "Every society faces challenges of representation. I am the leader of a gender-balanced cabinet, but my own political party has about 26 female representatives. So, we have a long way to go. When Trudeau was asked to name an Indian leader who inspired him, he was quick enough to take Gandhi's name. He said, "It needs tremendous amount of strength to be strong without having to be aggressive, without having to pick fights, and instead looking at how to better understand each other and how to question yourself. We should deal with our citizens as intelligent, reasonable folks instead of dividing them into vote-banks. We all need to reflect on Gandhi's policies as an universal leader."
