A solution for the decades-old problem of the Pirana dumping ground could be on the horizon. The state government on Tuesday announced Rs 100 crore for a bio-mining project at the site, as part of the 2018-19 fiscal budget. However, the project is awaiting clearance from the Centre. "Garbage of 40 years is lying in Pirana garbage hill. The biggest challenge with Pirana dumpsite is that the garbage in it is not segregated hence the players who are going to work on it will take some time. A Detailed Project Report have been submitted with the central government for funding," said Mukesh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner. "The recent announcement of Rs100 crore for a bio-mining project at Pirana by the state government will add pace to the work. Roughly. It will take around five years to finish the project and gain around 84 acres of land."The budget allocation was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel. In January, Kumar had proposed a provision of Rs 200 crore for Pirana in form of green bonds targeting private players. However, the opposition expressed their reservations about the new allocation. Congress Spokesperson Manish Doshi said: "This scheme is basically a scam of BJP-run government. Pirana is monument of BJP's mismanagement and the ruling party is announcing different schemes to fill the pockets of their own people. We would be happy if the fund utilized as per announcement and rather than filling the pockets of the BJP rulers." Pirana has been a dumping site for the past 40 years. Unfortunately, civic bodies do not segregate the waste they dump at the site. So far, around 85 lakh metric tonnes of garbage has accumulated there, with around 3,500 tonnes being added to it every day. A 5-YEAR WAIT
