The Rs 11,300-crore PNB fraud case involving diamantaire Nirav Modi was brought up in the Gujarat Assembly by the opposition Congress on Wednesday. Speaking about the case, Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani said the government remained silent even as the accused fled the country after siphoning off people's hard-earned money. "Your government remained silent when someone fled with money deposited in the bank by common people who worked hard to earn it," said Dhanani. "The fraudster is moving around freely, enjoying that money in foreign lands while you are claiming that your government has worked for development. It is an irony that when farmers or poor people approach banks for loans, they are denied the money." Dhanani spoke about the case and mentioned Nirav Modi on Wednesday, although Assembly rules forbid criticism of any person not present in the House. He also took on the government on other issues, including Aadhaar data leak case, Naliya rape case, penalties slammed on farmers for electricity consumption, privatisation in education and medical sector, fixed-pay policy for government employees, GST, reservation, and slow progress in Narmada and Metro rail projects. The senior Congress leader also spoke about the Ram Mandir issue and Article 370 during his speech. "You failed to keep your promise of constructing Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and Article 370 has still not been removed from Jammu and Kashmir," he said. "You promised to change the name of the city from Ahmedabad to Karnavati. People voted for you but you later removed it from your manifesto. We are still waiting to get the Rs 15 lakh in our accounts that you promised." Countering the comments of the Congress leader, Revenue Minister Kaushik Patel said: "People of Gujarat voted for the BJP and brought the party to power for six consecutive times because the policy and intention of our party is clear. Crores of poor people have received benefits of plenty of schemes introduced by the Gujarat government. The Congress does not deserve the right to talk about poor people as their government did not do anything other than misusing public funds." LOP SPEAKS “Your government remained silent when someone fled with money deposited in the bank by common people who worked hard to earn it,” said Dhanani.
