Two people died of heat stroke in the city last week, taking the total number of heat-related deaths this season to three. "When heat exhaustion is not addressed, heat stroke can follow. Untreated heat stroke cases lead to death. Although there were no heat wave conditions, prolonged heat exposure results in heat exhaustion," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC. Malaria and dengue on the rise: At a time when the civic body and the state government have intensified their efforts to rid the city of malaria, the disease appears to be on the rise with 99 cases reported in just the last week. The threat of vector-borne diseases also looms large, especially with the monsoon setting in. The city also witnessed fresh cases of dengue and chikungunya last week. According to the health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the city reported 253 cases of vector-borne diseases in the first 16 days of June. Of them, 246 cases of malaria, two falciparum, four dengue and one case of chikungunya has been reported. "There were fresh malaria cases reported last week but most of them are of those recurring infections," said Dr Solanki. Among waterborne diseases, 626 cases of gastroenteritis were reported in the first 16 days of June, of which 252 cases were reported in the last week itself. Three fresh cases of cholera were reported last week, making it the sixth in the month so far. In the same period, 242 cases of typhoid and 220 cases of jaundice were recorded.
