Gujarat government took the decision to relax the process of renewal of liquor permit for ex-servicemen in Gujarat. Following to protest programme by ex-servicemen in Gandhinagar on Wednesday over the suspension of liquor permit in the state by government, the minister of state for home, prohibition and excise Pradipsinh Jadeja made this announcement on Thursday. "We announce to reestablish the same system for renewal of liquor permission for ex-servicemen on health ground. The system for renewal of liquor permission is under amendment as the government wishes to make the system leak proof and no undeserving person should avail the permits," Jadeja said. "The permit renewal procedure is under the overhauling as there had been many discrepancies in the system that had been under implementation for many years. We are of the opinion that very less people should get this permits and those who need it genuinely. The amendment process may take some time and no time line can be given for this," Jadeja added. Bhootpurva Sainya Shakti Ekta Sangathan, an association of ex-servicemen in Gujarat staged protest programme in Gandhinagar on Wednesday and demanded to exempt them from the renewal process for liquor permits. They also threatened that they would hold a greater protest if their demands were not accepted in a month. Ashok Parmar, an ex-serviceman, talking to media persons said, "We are not addicted to liquor but that is tonic for us as we have been consuming it since we joined defence. Now this government does not wish that we should get the liquor for our health too. We do not tolerate such action and will hold a rally on July 22, if we are not exempted from the strange conditions for liquor permits." "This government has failed curb prohibition and spurious liquor is sold by bootleggers in every city of Gujarat. If this government is incapable of implementing strict liquor ban, they should leave this responsibility on us," Parmar added.
