The Gujarat government is planning to come down heavily on dhabas and restaurants situated along the highways that serve substandard or low-quality food. The government is going to form teams to conduct raids on highway food joints, and this will be a continuous process. Kishor Kanani, Minister of State for Health, said, "We are on a mission to ensure that food served in highway dhabas and restaurants are safe for consumption. Usually, these food joints are located in rural areas and that is why hardly any team reaches there for food quality inspection. There will be a special team for this and simultaneous raids will be conducted at different places. This team will make raids frequently so that the restaurant owners do not get an impression that the raids will be sparse, encouraging them to serve unhygienic food again. They should remain in fear that the team could come anytime and seal their restaurants," Kanani said. The minister also said that special powers will be given to the staff by issuing a special notification through a government resolution. The state government will form the teams from the district staff of food and drugs department and if required, the staff from the health department also will be asked to make the surprise visits. The government is going to procure the instruments and tools that will help the staff check the quality of the food, the minister further added.
