RIP Atal: ‘Chachaji was fond of sweets’

Talking about Vajpayee’s immense love for sweets, Surendra said, “He loved to have sweets made of ‘mava’, but jalebis were his favourite. On Vajpayee’s love for kids, his nephew said, “He was like a kid when he used to play with our kids. At that time, my wife Punam was with me and Atal chachaji saw a camera with her. He was a down-to-earth person and we never felt that he was acting like a PM.” He joked why she wasn’t taking his photo,” Surendra said.

AHMEDABAD: With former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee breathing his last in New Delhi on Thursday evening, his relatives in Ahmedabad recalled their fond memories with ‘Atal chachaji’ who was fond of sweets, especially ‘jalebis’.Surendra Vajpayee, 56, the former Prime Minister’s nephew (son of his cousin) who stays in Akhbarnagar area of the city, said that the veteran BJP leader always met his relatives cordially, and even when ill he never lost the wits and wisdom for which he was known.“The last time I met him was in 2005 when his condition started deteriorating. At that time, my wife Punam was with me and Atal chachaji saw a camera with her. He joked why she wasn’t taking his photo,” Surendra said. Talking about Vajpayee’s immense love for sweets, Surendra said, “He loved to have sweets made of ‘mava’, but jalebis were his favourite. On Vajpayee’s love for kids, his nephew said, “He was like a kid when he used to play with our kids. He was a down-to-earth person and we never felt that he was acting like a PM.”
