This is the first-of-its kind Gujarati web series that deals with the socially sensitive subject which is still talked in hushed tones in India where the Supreme Court recently decriminalized homosexuality.“I had been thinking of making a web series on lesbians for quite some time. The society usually talks about homosexual men but there is little or almost no mention of lesbian women who too face the same prejudices. Last year, I finally decided to make a web series revolving around a Gujarati girl who has shifted from Anand in Gujarat to the US,” said Jay Parikh, 28, who has directed the web-series.“The series is more about how one should first accept oneself before expecting the society to do so. We should be comfortable with the way we are. The series revolves around lead character Ria Desai’s dilemma, the charade of the double life she is living and how she deals with the truth when her brother learns about her sexual preferences,” Parikh, who completed his engineering studies in the city, before shifting to the US in 2012, said. The lead actress’ role has been played by Ria Patel who is pursuing a course in acting in Los Angeles and every actor has worked for free in this eight-episode series named The Story Tales. “The series also has cultural values. I hope to change the mindset of Indians, especially the Gujarati community, towards the LGBT issues with these series. And it may also help the LGBTs in accepting themselves. The series has come at the right time as India has takena huge leap forward by decriminalizing gay sex,” Parikh told TOI over phone from the US.The entire web series in seven days with episode of 10 minutes will be uploaded on the YouTube next month.
