AHMEDABAD: Under fire after its swimming coach was caught on camera whipping two minor girls with the whistle cord, Rajpath Club authorities lodged an FIR with the Vastrapur police station on Saturday.The assault had sparked widespread outrage among citizens and child rights activists.In the FIR, Amit Patel, the club manager, has stated that an inquiry had confirmed that Hardik Patel is seen meting out corporal punishment to the two girls. The club has taken serious note of the case and has already suspended the coach, the club manager said.Assistant commissioner of police Ashutosh Parmar said, “The manager of Rajpath Club has filed a complaint with Vastrapur police after the district child protection officer visited the club and recorded the statements of parents and other witnesses.” Parmar said that an FIR has been registered under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act which has provisions of imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh.“The child rights protection unit of the city police inspected and verified the video of the coach whipping the girls. The parents however refrained from filing an FIR, cops said.Joint commissioner of police, sector-1, Amitkumar Vishwakarma said that police have recorded the statements of both the girls.“The girls and their parents stated some unknown person recorded the video of the coach doing swimming tricks and their children have sustained no injuries,” Vishwakarma said.“Moreover, the coach has been suspended from the club, and so they do not want to lodge an FIR.” He said that police personnel are touch with the parents of the girls and are trying to persuade them to go ahead with an FIR.Meanwhile, Vastrapur police sent a detailed report to the district child rights protection officer stating that the parents of the girls are unwilling to file an FIR.“The report was sent on Saturday,” said a senior police official.
