Ganesh Visarjan: One die in violence, seven in drowning across the Gujarat

Seven people drowned in Kheda of which the bodies of five were recorded while two people died due to drowning in Chhota Udepur. Angered, the driver stabbed six people. Seven people across the state were reported to have died due to drowning while two were still missing during the immersion procession in Kheda and Chhota Udepur. Surat police officials said the incident occured when a procession was on its way for Ganesh immersion and a car driver honked at the crowd to make way. "When they did not give way a war of words erupted between the driver and some people in the procession.

A small incident of overtaking turned violent in Sayan village of Olpad taluka in Surat forcing the police to resort to lathicharge to bring order. One person died and five were injured after the accused stabbed six people following a heated argument. Surat police officials said the incident occured when a procession was on its way for Ganesh immersion and a car driver honked at the crowd to make way. "When they did not give way a war of words erupted between the driver and some people in the procession. Angered, the driver stabbed six people. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where one person succumbed to his injuries," said police officials. Cops said soon a crowd gathered at the local police station seeking custody of the accused and when cops refused they resorted to violence including damaging the car of a deputy superintendent of police. A car was also set fire. More cops were rushed to the village to restore peace. The State Emergency Control Room has confirmed the death of seven people. In Ahmedabad, Ganesh Visarjan remained peaceful except for one instance of stone pelting in Madhavpura following altercation between two groups. AMC's efforts to prevent the idols from being immersed in the river was not a success. In some places devotees managed to immerse the idols in the river instead of the artificial ponds created for the same.
