A pricey tragedy unfolded after a taxpayer was wrongly served a payment bill of over a crore! An occupier of one of the commercial properties in Isanpur owes Rs1,01,34,326 tax to AMC. Imran Panjwani, who is in complete disbelief of the tax thrashed on him, said he owned a property of 160 sq mt. However, the tax that he has been asked to pay was calculated on 1,642 sq mt property. "I don't know why every year I am getting tax bills in lakhs, while the neighbouring business units are getting a bill of around Rs5,000 to Rs5,200. I will not be able to pay tax in lakhs," said Panjwani who deals in scrap plastic business. "I could not understand what to do for the few years. The tax adds up one or two lakhs every year. Now, there is more than one crore tax due. The irony is that I can't pay that much, even if I sell the property," added the owner. According to the real-estate market, the value of the property is around Rs20 to Rs25 lakh. Panjwani had written to the south zone office early in 2017, urging them to reassess his property. In his complaint dated February 2, 2017, Panjwanisaid his enquiry had been forwarded to the ward inspector. "I have written to the civic body. I have asked them to check the area of my property before issuing any tax. But, nothing has done so far. When I visited the AMC office, they told me that inspectors will visit us," Panjwani said. The owner has been slapped different tax dues, education cess since 2001-02, he said, adding there is no uniformity of the taxes and interests. "I am further confused at the different kinds of interest rates that change every year. They have slapped me Rs29.79 lakh tax, Rs49,645 as an education cess and online interest Rs13811 since last three years," he said. Panjwani said the two times the tax bills for 2009-10 were Rs10,49,440 and for 2013-14 was Rs10,86,285. Tax department officer Debashish Banerjee said, "We have to check the matter. There could be some technical errors. We can say about it only after visiting the spot. If there will be any change, we will rectify it." BAD MATHS
