The state government's plan to invite all chief ministers and governors to the inauguration of Statue of Unity at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31 has been dropped. As per the latest plan, CMs and other VVIPs would be visiting the Statue of Unity only in November. The original plan was to make a huge spectacle of the inauguration of the world's tallest statue by inviting top political leaders to the inaugural ceremony on October 31. In fact, senior ministers have been travelling to different states to invite respective chief ministers and governors to the Statue's inauguration. However, it has now been decided that only PM Modi, will be invited to the inauguration. "The purpose is to ensure that the focus is on the grand statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It was felt that inviting too many dignitaries would take away the spotlight from the main event, and hence this change," said a senior official, requesting anonymity. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also confirmed that only PM would be attending the October 31 inauguration. "President, Vice President, (Lok Sabha) Speaker, chief ministers, and governors will be visiting the Statue of Unity in November. We will have celebrations throughout the month," Rupani said. The 182-metre statue, the world's tallest statue, has been built at a cost of Rs2,989 crore. The project was announced in 2010 when Modi was the chief minister. The Statue is expected to put Narmada district on the global tourism map, and boost development in the region.
