We are taking all measures to make sure 85% of jobs go to locals in these sectors as well. Among the large companies, it was found that at SMC just 50% of jobs have gone to local persons. While the issue is a political hot potato , the state government isdirecting companies to adhere to the policy mandating that 85% of jobs go to local persons. He said, "We have done a survey on the implementation of the 85% of jobs to locals guideline, which companies promised to follow while receiving benefits under government incentive schemes. We have thus advised them to adhere to the 85% norm in all recruitment and to fill emerging vacancies with locals."

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani had announced recently that his government intends to enact a new law making it mandatory for industrial units in Gujarat to give 85% of jobs to persons domiciled in Gujarat. Now, his government has started following up with companies that are not adhering to the policy guideline - which currently does not provide for punitive actions - that states that 85% of jobs should go to Gujarat domiciles. The Gujarat labour and employment department on Tuesday issued an advisory to Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) and other companies which are not compliant with the guideline.Vipul Mitra , additional chief secretary of the labour and employment department, confirmed the development. He said, "We have done a survey on the implementation of the 85% of jobs to locals guideline, which companies promised to follow while receiving benefits under government incentive schemes. Among the large companies, it was found that at SMC just 50% of jobs have gone to local persons. We have thus advised them to adhere to the 85% norm in all recruitment and to fill emerging vacancies with locals." An email query sent to Suzuki Motors Gujarat (SMG) Private Limited, a subsidiary of SMC, evoked no response. The Japanese company has set up a plant at Hansalpur near Mehsana."At many companies the figure is between 80% and 85%. Compliance is largely satisfactory, except for certain industries like foundries, ceramics etc., which are not preferred by locals. We are taking all measures to make sure 85% of jobs go to locals in these sectors as well. The state government has decided to regularly seek reports on the implementation of the 85% rule," he added. For more than two weeks now, Gujarat has been on tenterhooks due to widespread attacks on migrant labourers, following the rape of a 14-month-old Himmatnagar girl on September 28, allegedly by a migrant from Bihar. The outrage took a vicious turn when political leaders mainly from the Congress and Thakor Sena gave it an unemployment twist, calling on factory owners to fire migrant workers and employ local youths instead. While the issue is a political hot potato , the state government isdirecting companies to adhere to the policy mandating that 85% of jobs go to local persons.
