Two days after a key witness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case claimed that Sheikh had told him about former IPS officer DG Vanzara having given a contract to kill former home minister Haren Pandya, Vanzara said that Khan was a criminal, and his statement doesn't have much importance. "Azam Khan is a known criminal. There are cases against him in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other states. Even today, he is in jail. The statement made by such a person doesn't have much importance. More so, because when CBI recorded his statement, he had not said any such thing," Vanzara told reporters. In his statement before a Mumbai court on Saturday, Khan said that Vanzara had given the contract to Sheikh for killing Pandya. Vanzara, however, said that Khan himself had said in the court that he did not have any personal information, and had learnt about it from Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati. "His statement is hearsay. Such evidence does not account for much under the Indian Evidence Act, and is not admissible under the law," he said further. Vanzara, who was accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, was discharged by the trial court in August last year. Vanzara also pointed out that the Bombay High Court had also upheld his discharge in the case. The former IPS officer also said that the latest statement was another conspiracy to defame him.
