Chandigarh: Two youths injured in firing at Baltana

The Baltana police post in-charge, Sub-Inspector Satinder Singh, told Chandigarh Newsline that the incident happened on Thursday night when Sanjeev Kumar (42), a resident of Ram Darbar, Chandigarh, was having drinks with his friend at restaurant J M Royal in Baltana. I too suffered injury to my neck. Asked about the lapse by the Baltana police, S-I Satwinder Singh said that they did not receive any call from the control room. The restaurant’s manager, Mohan, told the police that Sanjeev and his friend started playing antakshri to which the other two men objected. Mohan told the police that after this, Sanjeev started listening to songs on his mobile phone while his friend went outside.

Since the Baltana police failed to reach the spot in time, following which the Panchkula police took one of the injured person to civil hospital in Panchkula from where he was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. Sanjeev works as a daily wager. “Sanjeev said in his statement that there was a rush in the bar so he and his friend sat in a separate cabin where the manager of the restaurant used to sit. He told us that two persons were already sitting there,” S-I Satinder Singh said. The restaurant’s manager, Mohan, told the police that Sanjeev and his friend started playing antakshri to which the other two men objected. Mohan told the police that after this, Sanjeev started listening to songs on his mobile phone while his friend went outside. Sanjeev said in his statement that when his friend left the cabin, the two men who were objecting to them started abusing him and when he objected, one stopped him from leaving the cabin and held his collar while the other fired a gunshot at him from behind. “The man who held my collar was also injured as the bullet hit his hand. I too suffered injury to my neck. I somehow managed to run from the cabin and escaped after entering a jagran which was being held nearby. I asked for help, following which someone called the police control number,” Sanjeev said in his statement. Both the accused escaped on a bike with one of their friends who came there to pick them. Deepak, one of the persons who was present in the jagran, told Chandigarh Newsline that after the call was made to the police control room, a Panchkula police party came to the spot instead of Baltana police. He added that Sanjeev was taken to the hospital by Panchkula police team. He was first taken to Panchkula civil hospital in Phase 6 from where he was referred to the PGI. Asked about the lapse by the Baltana police, S-I Satwinder Singh said that they did not receive any call from the control room. He said that after receiving the information, they reached the spot ‘immediately’. S-I Satwinder Singh said that they registered a case against three persons identified as Naveen, Raman and one unidentified person under sections 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act.
