Woman cop alleges harassment

Following arguments, he stepped out on the condition that at night if he felt cold, she would allow him in the room.

The 23-year-old woman constable mentions the hellish experience during the call of duty at Dhordopost when she was asked to share a room with a male colleague.“We are posted for the safety of other women, but what about our safety when harassed by our colleague on duty? What can we expect from others when policemen on duty themselves misbehave with us? I have raised this issue with police authorities as I don’t want others like me to suffer and safety of women constables is ensured by taking action against the accused,” said the young woman cop.As per the FIR lodged atpolice station, the woman constable posted with Mandvi police station was given bandobast duty Dhordo Kalo Dungar post along with others at ongoing desert festival. The FIR stated that on November 11she reached Kalo Dungar, a remote area. At night when she went to the room provided, she was shocked to find only a single room both for male and female constables.Shailendrasinh R Jadeja, constable with Nakhtrana police station posted at Kalo Dungar was already in the room. When she requested Jadeja to step out and sleep in the adjoining quarters of the border wing jawans, he initially refused. Following arguments, he stepped out on the condition that at night if he felt cold, she would allow him in the room. Left with no option, she agreed and locked herself up. She states in her complaint that she was unable to sleep as Jadeja kept banging on the door and standing near the window.Around 5 am, he knocked at the door and kept banging till 6.30am. The victim told Mirror, “It was very scary as many thoughts raced through my mind. I have never felt so helpless. Being in a remote area, the mobile network was not available. This man kept on insisting that he will enter the room. It was the morning aarti bells at a nearby temple that brought relief.”Hearing the temple bells, she opened the door, but Jadeja forced himself into the room and caught her with wrong intentions, she said. As she could hear people’s voices around, she gathered courage and freed herself from his grip and ran towards the temple. She informed the border wing jawans about the entire incident. They intervened and sent Jadeja to another duty point.On November 13, the woman gave awritten application to Khavda police station and after primary investigation an FIR was filed against Jadeja, said Khavda PSI N K. DySP S K Vala of SC/ST cell who is also heading the investigation said, “An FIR has been registered against Jadeja under IPC 354 (B) and Atrocity Act Sections 3(1)w (ll). We have recorded victim’s statement and she stands by her complaint.” When asked how one room was allotted to both male and female constables, Vala said, “I will inquire about it.”Accused constable Jadeja has been shifted back to Nakhtrana police station with immediate effect. Khavda PSI Sarvaiya said, “Three women constables were posted at Dhordo and we had accommodated them in control room. While two of them had left after the aarti, the victim stayed there.” But Sarvaiya was not able to clarify why this woman chose to stay back and why the other two had left.He said, “The constables’ duty is from morning aarti till evening aarti, after which all tourists leave. So police shift also ends. Cops on duty with own vehicles return home, but those who do not have vehicle stay back as no transportation is available.”
