Stressing on the need to create infrastructure for surgeries, Padma awardee Dr Devi Prasad Shetty on Saturday said that nearly 40 million people die every year due to lack of access to safe surgery. Delivering the 39th Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Lecture here, Shetty said: “India requires 65 million surgeries a year, against which, all the hospitals put together perform only 25-26 million surgeries per year”, he said, adding that 40 million people suffer and gradually die every year due to lack of access to safe surgery. Shetty, who is also the chairman of Bangalore-based Narayana group of hospitals, said a change is expected after the launch of the central government’s health insurance scheme, which he said would be a “game-changer”. He said nursing was a good profession but it is a dying profession because of the limited opportunities in that field. “With work experience in ICU, a nurse would not be considered qualified to prescribe a pill”, he said, adding that the government should create structured training programmes for nurses.
