Essel Infraprojects Ltd on Saturday signed a concession agreement with Gujarat Water Infrastructure Ltd (GWIL), a state government company, to build and operate a Rs 1,000-crore desalination plant at Jodiya in Jamnagar district. With the entire project cost being borne by the private company, the Gujarat government will pay Essel Infraprojects for the treated water supplied from the proposed plant. Essel Infraprojects will source the technology for converting sea water to drinking water from a Spanish firm, Abengoa. “Once the plant is ready, we will be providing potable drinking water at a spot decided by the state government. According to the state government, the plant with a capacity of 100 million litres per day (MLD), will supply water to the water grid of Gujarat for the next 25 years.

According to the state government, the plant with a capacity of 100 million litres per day (MLD), will supply water to the water grid of Gujarat for the next 25 years. The water will be transported from Jodiya to Hirapar through a pipeline. At Hirapar, the pipeline will connect to the existing water grid and will be supplied to Jamnagar and Rajkot cities. The water will also be provided to rural areas of both the districts as well as nearby Morbi. “Once the plant is ready, we will be providing potable drinking water at a spot decided by the state government. Though we are yet to finalise the payment that the state government will make for the water, the payment will be on a monthly basis,” Gopal Gupta, a spokesperson from Essel Infraprojects, told The Sunday Express. Essel Infraprojects will source the technology for converting sea water to drinking water from a Spanish firm, Abengoa. The plant is expected to be ready in 30 months and will have a capacity to store 20 million litres. It will also help in decreasing Jamnagar district’s dependence on Narmada water. “Gujarat has taken a lead in development of this innovative PPP model. Such a model can bring in large private sector investment in water sector and can generate billion litres of water across the coastline of the country. It can remove the scarcity of water not only in Gujarat, but also in other parts of India,” stated the release from the company. The government said that apart from Jodiya, similar desalination projects are being planned in Porbandar, Dwarka, Veraval and Ghogha (Bhavnagar). Desalination plants of smaller capacities will also be set up in Kutch, Patan and Banaskantha. For all the latest Ahmedabad News, download Indian Express App
