Figures for the bird injuries collated as part of the Karuna Abhiyan of the state government revealed that in all 1500 injuries were reported on January 15 while 900 such cases were reported on January 14. The figures are for all 10 talukas of Ahmedabad district including Ahmedabad city. It should be noted that last year in all around 1800 cases of bird injuries were reported. This year the number of injuries saw an almost 33% rise in injuries. "This year the number of cases that we have received is high but the good thing is that the casualty figures are low compared to last year. Last year it was around 8% and this year it has been lower than that although we are yet to get the final figures,"s adi Brahmbhatt. Another official who has worked with organisations that help rescue injured birds said that despite the ban, Chinese manja continues to be used. "This is why casualty figures are so high. It should be noted that across the state, 244 medical centers run by NGOs, 46 animal ambulances, 500 v veterinary doctors and 781 clinics were set up under the government's' Karuna Abhiyan programme. Over 270 NGOs had also joined hands with the forest department for the initiative. "The number of birds being injured due to Chinese manja is on the rise. It is because this time the cops were not very active in preventing sale and purchase of such manja. Moreover when all that the offenders get is Rs 200 fine for breaking the rules, people would not be deterred," sadi Panchal. He added that they have collected leftover Chinese Manja from not only the injured birds they rescued but also from the streets and treetops.
