AHMEDABAD: Three men with country-made pistols stormed into the Axis Bank branch at the Chhatral GIDC in Kalol on Saturday afternoon and robbed of Rs 43.80 lakh cash. They also took a gold chain worth Rs 40,000 from an employee, Meena Patel. Another employee, Deep Patel, was shot in the leg as the robbers felt he was about to confront them. “He has been rushed to hospital and is out of danger,” said Gandhinagar SP Mayur Chavda.The robbers calmly walked into the branch with guns in hand and quickly took positions, as if the heist had been carefully scouted out and planned.According to police, the three men, with faces hidden, arrived on a motorcycle. Cameras captured them entering at 1.15pm and leaving at about 1.20pm.DSP V N Solanki said, “Two robbers had covered their faces with cloth while the third was wearing a mask. The three then sped off, towards Pansar village. We have barricaded all exit points of the district and have informed other agencies about the robbery .” Inspector V A Dabhi of Chhatral GIDC police station said that according to a complaint lodged by Jaydeep Thakker, the branch manager, the three men entered the branch at 1.15pm.“They went straight to the cashier and took the cash from him at gunpoint. About then, Deep Patel, returned from the toilet was surprised to see the gunmen in the bank. The robbers thought Patel was about to confront them and one of them shot him in the foot. They then rushed out, got on to one motorcycle, and sped off,” said Dabhi.Axis Bank, in a statement, said, “An incident of robbery and assault on staff at our Chhatral branch has been reported. The matter is currently under investigation and we are fully cooperating with police. One employee was injured in the incident and was promptly attended to. He is presently safe.”
