This was confirmed by Minister of State for HomeSince 1986, the government has been doling out painfully paltry sums of a few thousands to gallantry award winners from Gujarat. On Wednesday, when Mirror delved into the payouts made by Gujarat government to its 39 bravehearts, the revelation was shocking — it pays a measly Rs 20,000 to its Ashok Chakra awardee. If the same sacrifice is made by a soldier in Haryana, he is awarded Rs 1 crore.According to data on the website of Sainik Welfare & Resettlement department, which functions under the state Home ministry and handles the payouts, aawardee receives a mere Rs 22,500 one-time payout and a lowly Rs 500 monthly annuity for 30 years. To beat it, this sum is a revised amount — up from Rs 15,000 that was paid prior to 1986. The data shows an Ashok Chakra awardee is given a mere Rs 20,000, Sarvottam Yuddha Seva medal awardee Rs 17,000, a Mahavir Chakra awardee Rs 15,000, Kirti Chakra awardee Rs 12,000, Uttam Yuddha Seva Medal awardee Rs 10,000, Vir Chakra awardee Rs 7,000, Shaurya Chakra awardee Rs 5,000 and a Yuddha Seva medal awardee Rs 4,000.Gujarat has had one recipient of the Ashok Chakra, two recipients of Mahavir Chakra, two Kirti Chakras, five Vir Chakras, four Shaurya Chakras and 25 other bravery awards. To put things in perspective, all of these martyred brave men have been given a total amount of an embarrassing Rs 2,04,000.Reacting to Mirror report, MLAs across party lines have sought for a review of the sum, saying Gujarat is one of the most prosperous states of the country and it ill behoves PM’s home state to provide meagre rewards to its soldiers who fight for the protection of the land.The Centre has issued guidelines on the minimum cash grant to be given to gallantry award winners by the states, but states are at liberty to fix their own ceiling.Some also offer cash in lieu of land and pension. Among the laggards, along with Gujarat, are Arunachal, West Bengal, Punjab, Odisha and Manipur, which compensate soldiers poorly. Haryana is the most generous of the lot.WHAT THEY SAID
