In less than a month of Udgam School for Children announcing change in school timings and introducing two shifts, the state government has cancelled the permission for violating primary education rule. As per the circular issued by the state government, since the school has been found violating the Right to Education rules, 2012 and Bombay primary education rules, 1949, the permission to run two shifts has been cancelled. As per the RTE Act, primary classes should have 200 working days. Commenting on the same, Manan Choksi, Executive Director, Udgam School for Children said, “The government has got into some misunderstanding. We have more working days than what is mentioned in the RTE Act. We will soon be writing to the state government clarifying our stand with documents. We work on first and third Saturdays, if the government has issues, we can keep all Saturdays working.” He added, “Even during Navratri, when schools were asked to give a Navratri vacation after the festival, the school functioned on the following Saturdays.” When the school had announced new shifts and change in school timings, more than 100 parents had staged a silent protest outside the school premises expressing their unhappiness against the decision. The school, through a recent circular, had announced the introduction of two shift, morning shift from 7.00 am to 12.00 pm and afternoon shift from 12.30 pm to 5.30 pm and had allowed parents only 15 days of time to choose their preference. The parents had alleged that the two shifts will compromise on the quality of education. The school had stated that the new timings will not just be favourable to students but also for all types of families – late rising, early rising, and both parents working. For families where both parents are working, the school will provide an option for Before School Activity (BSA) from 10.30-12.30 at nominal cost after which students can go to their respective classes.
