Gujarat: Congress screening committee meets, candidates may be named soon

The Congress's screening committee met at New Delhi this evening and discussed names of candidates recommended by the party's state election committee comprising state Congress president Amit Chavda, leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, in-charge of party's Gujarat affairs Rajeev Satav, and others. The Congress is likely to announce candidates for 22 Lok Sabha seats of the state in a couple of days, party officials said. The Congress had announced its candidates for Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad West (SC), and Chhota Udepur (ST) seats on March 7. The Congress is likely to field a Koli candidate from Navsari seat and a Patidar candidate from Surat seat. The Central Election Committee would finalise the candidates during its meeting on Wednesday.

The Congress's screening committee met at New Delhi this evening and discussed names of candidates recommended by the party's state election committee comprising state Congress president Amit Chavda, leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, in-charge of party's Gujarat affairs Rajeev Satav, and others. The Central Election Committee would finalise the candidates during its meeting on Wednesday. "On more than half a dozen seats, the panel comprises names of just one candidate. It is likely that these names may be announced tomorrow itself, and those of the remaining 13-14 seats in the next 3-4 days," said a party source. Insiders said that former union minister Tushar Chaudhary is likely to be the party's candidate from Bardoli (ST) seat, and MLA Jitu Chaudhary from Valsad. The Congress is likely to field a Koli candidate from Navsari seat and a Patidar candidate from Surat seat. Though a decision has not been taken yet, the Bharuch seat could be given to Chhotu Vasava-led Bharatiya Tribal Party. The Congress had announced its candidates for Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad West (SC), and Chhota Udepur (ST) seats on March 7.
