Lok Sabha Election 2019: Gujarat has most crorepatis in phase-3

Although in percentage terms, the percentage of crorepati candidates in Gujarat is just 20% of all candidates who are crorepatis. Interestingly, despite having the highest number of crorepati candidates, none of the candidates feature among the top 10 with highest assets. Two candidates, both from the BJP, also make it to the top 10 list of candidates with the highest income. Gujarat stands third in absolute numbers as far as candidates with serious criminal cases against them is concerned. AJ Patel, the Congress candidates from Mehsana, has the highest total assets among all candidates in Gujarat at Rs 69 crore.

Gujarat has highest number of crorepati candidates in absolute numbers, even beating out its neighbouring state of Maharashtra. Analysis of criminal background, finances, education, gender and other details of candidates in states going to polls in the third phase by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that Gujarat had 75 crorepati candidates while Maharashtra had 71 followed by 46 in Karnataka. Although in percentage terms, the percentage of crorepati candidates in Gujarat is just 20% of all candidates who are crorepatis. The organisation analysed 370 of the 371 candidates who are contesting for the 26 seats in Gujarat which goes to polls on April 23. Interestingly, despite having the highest number of crorepati candidates, none of the candidates feature among the top 10 with highest assets. However, one candidate, Samsubhai Devada from Dahod, is among the top 10 candidates with zero assets. Three other candidates from Dadra & Nagar Haveli also figure in the list. Two candidates, both from the BJP, also make it to the top 10 list of candidates with the highest income. Poonam Madam, BJP's candidate from Jamnagar had a self income of Rs 1 crore and total income of Rs 4 crore while Amit Shah who is contesting from Gandhinagar had a self income of Rs 53 lakh and total income of Rs 2 crore. AJ Patel, the Congress candidates from Mehsana, has the highest total assets among all candidates in Gujarat at Rs 69 crore. Patel ranks 12th among all the candidates in the states going to polls in the third phase as far as total assets are concerned. Chandrakant Patil, BJP's candidate from Navsari comes second in Gujarat with Rs 44 crore of assets. A candidate from the state, Sirasat Vedhbhai who is contesting from Ahmedabad, is also among the top 10 candidates with lowest assets with movable assets worth Rs 3,300. With a liability of Rs 21 crore, BJP's Porbandar candidate Ramesh Dhauk is in third position among the top 10 candidates with highest liabilities. As far as those with criminal cases is concerned, Gujarat had 58 candidates with declared criminal cases which is 16% of all such candidates while the state had 34 candidates with serious criminal cases which is 9% of all such candidates. Gujarat stands third in absolute numbers as far as candidates with serious criminal cases against them is concerned. Maharashtra tops with 54 such candidates followed by Kerala which has 39 such candidates. The analysis by ADR revealed that Gujarat had 12 red alert constituencies. These are constituencies where three or more candidates contesting the elections have criminal cases against them. IN FIGURES
