Gujarat: 1.20 lakh police, security personnel to be on guard

Additional director general of police Sanjay Shrivastav said that 1.20 lakh police and security personnel would be deployed for security arrangements. More than 1.20 lakh police and security personnel will be on the guard in the state to ensure free and fair elections on Tuesday, election authorities said. The CEO said that since announcement of elections on March 10, drugs worth Rs 524.34 crore, liquor worth Rs 11.13 crore, cash of Rs 7.58 crore, and valuables worth Rs 1.88 crore, have been seized in the state. "The number of eligible voters in the state is 4.51 crore, including 10.06 lakh voters in the age group of 18-19. The polling would take place at 51,851 polling booths in the state from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

More than 1.20 lakh police and security personnel will be on the guard in the state to ensure free and fair elections on Tuesday, election authorities said. State's chief electoral officer S Murali Krishna said on Monday that all preparations for free and fair conduct of elections have been completed. "The number of eligible voters in the state is 4.51 crore, including 10.06 lakh voters in the age group of 18-19. There are also 1.68 lakh Divyang voters," Krishna told reporters. Ramps, drinking water arrangements, wheel-chairs, special parking arrangements, and Braille voter guide and voting slip would be provided to Divyang voters, he said. The polling would take place at 51,851 polling booths in the state from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Of the total booths, 910 booths would be managed only by women, and 182 others by Divyangs. Over 2.23 lakh government employees and officers have been deployed on polling duty as presiding officers, first polling officers, micro observers, and sector officers. Additional director general of police Sanjay Shrivastav said that 1.20 lakh police and security personnel would be deployed for security arrangements. "Over 44,000 police personnel, over 150 companies of central armed police forces, 12 companies of state reserve police, and 1,055 forest guards will be on polling duty," he said. The remaining would be deployed for maintaining law & order, VIP movement, and other duties, he said further. Krishna declined to provide details about vulnerable and critical polling booths, but said that in addition to more security, additional measures such as web-casting and micro observers have been deployed at such booths. The CEO said that since announcement of elections on March 10, drugs worth Rs 524.34 crore, liquor worth Rs 11.13 crore, cash of Rs 7.58 crore, and valuables worth Rs 1.88 crore, have been seized in the state. He also said that 186 complaints regarding violation of model code of conduct had been received so far.
