The government will ensure that rides come up only after proper safety checks are conducted at regular intervals. We will take all possible actions to ensure there is no loss of lives," said Rupani. Accordingly, the state government has taken the mishap at Kankaria with grave seriousness and ordered stern actions against those responsible. The ride can accommodate 32 persons and had 31 persons on at the time of the mishap. However, the mayor said that instructions have been given by the chief minister and home minister to conduct an impartial investigation into the mishap.

With a number of fairs popping up next month all over the state for Janmashtami, all rides at these set-ups will be checked for safety parameters on a regular basis, chief minister Vijay Rupani has said a statement. Meanwhile, the Congress party conducted demonstrations at the headquarters of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and sought the resignation of mayor Bijal Patel for alleged negligence following the mishap involving a ride on Sunday. "Lots of rides will be organised during Janmashtami. Two persons lost their lives on Sunday, when a ride 'Discovery' at Kankaria Lakefront collapsed. Those who lost their lives include Manali Rajwadi (24), a resident of CTM in Hirabag area and Mohammad Jahid Momin (22), a resident of Danilimda. The collapse of the ride also injured 29 persons. The ride can accommodate 32 persons and had 31 persons on at the time of the mishap. The Congress party conducted demonstrations at mayor Bijal Patel's office on Monday and demanded that he resign on moral grounds by claiming responsibility for the mishap. The party also demanded that the family of the dead be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and those injured should get Rs 1 lakh each. "There should be a mechanism of determining the accountability in such mishaps. We have sought resignation of mayor Bijal Patel. We want a thorough inquiry into the incident and action against those whose negligence resulted in the loss of precious lives," said Dinesh Sharma, leader of the opposition in the AMC. However, Patel said that no official of the AMC can be held accountable for the mishap. "The AMC has no direct role in operation of amusement parks. Roads and Building (R&B) department provides safety certificate and the police provides license to operate," she told DNA. While there are claims that a report, allegedly by the R&B department, had pointed to the lapse in the ride, Patel said that no such report was brought to the notice of the mayor. "The director of Lakefront gets the reports. There is no case of me stepping down from the post," she told DNA. Patel also denied any favouritism in allotment of the contract to operate the ride. "The contract was given in 2015 through a tender process. The Congress did not raise objection at that time, so what is the logic of raising objection now?" she said. However, the mayor said that instructions have been given by the chief minister and home minister to conduct an impartial investigation into the mishap. "Action will be taken against whoever is responsible," she said. Mayor Under Fire
