The state government on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of two people who died in an amusement park ride accident in Kankaria in Ahmedabad. Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja made the announcement in reply to a question on what actions had been taken against those responsible for the tragedy. Jadeja also informed that all the injured in the case were treated at the exchequer's expense at the AMC-run LG Hospital in the city. That compensation will be given from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Jadeja also informed the house that six people have been arrested so far in connection with the case and a committee will also be formed to look into safety aspects of amusement park rides across the state. "The committee will look into the best practices across the country and the world, and make suggestions that will be implemented," Jadeja said. Two people died and 29 were injured after an amusement park ride 'Discovery' crashed after a pipe of the main shaft broke. Of the 29 who were injured, 10 had to be operated upon due to fractures and other serious injuries. The dead were identified as Manali Rajwadi and Mohammed Javed. Following the tragedy, the state had ordered safety checks for all such rides across the state. The Opposition pointed out that all the people arrested in connection with the case were lower-level employees operating the ride. "No action has been taken on the higher-level officials who gave the permission for the ride to be operated," said Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar. Jadeja clarified that though the Road and Building Department and the AMC had given the operators a NOC, and the operator was supposed to carry out a safety audit every month. "The R&B and the AMC awarded the yearly NOC, but the monthly safety certificate was to be procured by the company," said Jadeja. He also said that according to FSL findings, corrosion in the shaft and few other defects led to the tragedy.
