Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose relation marked by love, respect

The relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was marked by deep love, affection and respect towards each other, said Sugata Bose, grand nephew of Bose, who is Gardener Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs, Harvard University. He also dispelled the conspiracy stories about the demise of the grand uncle and reiterated that Subhash had died in the plane crash. He termed the theories that Subhash was held captive in Russia and lived as a ‘Baba’ as an insult to this great son of India. “Subhash Chandra Bose tried very hard to get Gandhiji to nominate the members of the working committee but was unsuccessful. In one of his address over radio, SC Bose had also termed Gandhiji as ‘The Father of the Nation”.

He dispelled the myth that the two great leaders, had a severe difference of opinion, following which SC Bose had parted ways after the beginning of World War -2. He also dispelled the conspiracy stories about the demise of the grand uncle and reiterated that Subhash had died in the plane crash. He termed the theories that Subhash was held captive in Russia and lived as a ‘Baba’ as an insult to this great son of India. Addressing a lecture at Sabarmati Ashram, Sugata Bose said that in 1939 Bose had won the election of the president of Congress but there were differences with Gandhiji on a number of issues and the right-wing within the Congress had passed a resolution that the president nominate the members of the Working Committee as per the wishes of Gandhiji. However, Subhash Chandra Bose promised that it will always be his aim and object to try and win Gandhiji’s confidence ‘for the simple reason that it will be a tragic thing for me if I win confidence of other people the but fail to win the confidence of India’s greatest man,’ Bose said quoting his grand uncle. “Subhash Chandra Bose tried very hard to get Gandhiji to nominate the members of the working committee but was unsuccessful. Once it was clear that an impasse has been reached, Subhash submitted his resignation,” he said.During an interaction, American Journalist Louis Fischer asked Gandhiji what he thought of Bose’s action to seek help from Germany during WW-2. Gandhi had replied that ‘Bose was a patriot among patriots’. In one of his address over radio, SC Bose had also termed Gandhiji as ‘The Father of the Nation”.
