Ahmedabad: Doctors remove knife stuck in neck of a patient

A team of doctors in Civil Hospital here has successfully operated on a 28-year-old man who was admitted in a serious condition after being stabbed by his rivals near the neck, with the knife stuck inside the neck. The doctors decided to immediately carry out the critical surgery and the patient was operated. Doctors said a parallel incision was made so that the knife could be taken out of the neck, while simultaneously stitching the incision caused by the knife. After the surgery, the patient was kept in observation to ensure that there is no complication or allergic reaction. Civil Hospital’s Superintendent MM Prabhakar said the surgery was critical as the knife got stuck inside the neck and during the process of taking it out, it could have caused considerable damage to the patient.

The surgery was critical as the knife was very close to the main nerve carrying blood to the brain and even a small mistake in the surgery could have proved fatal for the patient. As per the case details, the man, a resident of Nikol in Ahmedabad, was going on his vehicle when someone stabbed him on his neck with a sharp-edged knife. He was taken to Kakadiya Hospital in Bapunagar, which referred him to Civil Hospital. He was admitted in the emergency ward of the hospital, where a team of ENT specialists led by the department’s head Bela Prajapati and assisted by Devang Gupta and Chaitri Shah, attended him. The doctors, who were treating the man, said that the crucial part was to ensure that there is no movement of the neck or else the knife would cause greater damage. The patient was immediately sent for a CT Scan in the same condition when it was found that the knife was very close to the main nerve carrying blood to the brain. The doctors decided to immediately carry out the critical surgery and the patient was operated. Doctors said a parallel incision was made so that the knife could be taken out of the neck, while simultaneously stitching the incision caused by the knife. After the surgery, the patient was kept in observation to ensure that there is no complication or allergic reaction. Finally, when his condition was termed as stable, he was discharged from the hospital. Civil Hospital’s Superintendent MM Prabhakar said the surgery was critical as the knife got stuck inside the neck and during the process of taking it out, it could have caused considerable damage to the patient.
