If the claims of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are to be believed, the citizens stepping out of the house to travel on city roads will hardly face any problem. Countering government on its statement, the opposition Congress said the claims cater to only the major roads and there are many other areas especially in eastern and southern zones, where roads require comprehensive repair work. The municipal corporation conducted a repair work of potholes on a war footing during nine days beginning September 13," said a statement from AMC. Jatin Sheth, Convenor of Nagrik Sashaktikaran Manch ridiculed the claims of AMC and countered that repair work is not done at most of the places. "Even after the deadline ends, roads are not repaired then, AMC will repair the roads on its behalf and will recover the cost," said Prajapati.

If the claims of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are to be believed, the citizens stepping out of the house to travel on city roads will hardly face any problem. As in this regard, a senior municipal official claimed that the civic body has conducted patchwork at 14,316 locations between September 13 and September 22. Countering government on its statement, the opposition Congress said the claims cater to only the major roads and there are many other areas especially in eastern and southern zones, where roads require comprehensive repair work. While speaking to media persons in the city on Tuesday, Deputy Municipal Commissioner JS Prajapati said that roads were damaged in the city due to unusual high rains and also because of works conducted on road to put the pipelines of power, gas, water, etc. AMC has a road network of about 3,580 kilometers. "Roads were damaged because of a number of reasons. The municipal corporation conducted a repair work of potholes on a war footing during nine days beginning September 13," said a statement from AMC. Accordingly, 2,801 patches were repaired in the north zone, 1,825 patches in the west zone, 2,276 in the south zone, 2,776 in the east zone, 1,266 in the central zone, 1,577 in the northwest zone and 1,795 patches in southwest zone. Entire repair work was conducted with at cost of Rs 3 crore. Jatin Sheth, Convenor of Nagrik Sashaktikaran Manch ridiculed the claims of AMC and countered that repair work is not done at most of the places. "The patchwork is also uneven, posing a threat to the commuters and pedestrians. Moreover, contractors are not taken to task," Sheth told DNA. Lashing out at the claims of AMC, Opposition Congress said that these are nothing but efforts to fool people. "Whoever wants to come with me I will take the person on a scooter and show the status of roads. They are full of potholes," said Imran Khedawala, MLA from Jamalpur – Khadia constituency and a corporator from Jamalpur ward. When asked why no action is taken against Ahmedabad metro rail project as roads are severely damaged along the stretch, Prajapati said that the matter has been time and again brought to the notice of metro rail project authorities. "There is a new MD now. Last week, we had a detailed meeting with them. They have promised that roads will be repaired within a week (beginning Tuesday)," said Prajapati. AMC has been complaining to metro authorities, no action has been taken so far. "Even after the deadline ends, roads are not repaired then, AMC will repair the roads on its behalf and will recover the cost," said Prajapati. FOR BETTER ROADS
