A city-based private hospital has successfully carried out the bilateral hip replacement surgery of the tallest man in India—Dharmendra Pratap Singh—who fell short of just two inches to clinch the world record. According to Sharma, a 68 size acetabular cup was used for the right hip and a 70 size cup was used for the left hip, as against the usual size of 52 to 54. Sharma said owing to the poor financial condition of Singh and considering it as a special case, KD Hospital has conducted the surgeries free of cost. Earlier, he had undergone two surgeries in Lucknow for his fracture in left hip before he was treated in Ahmedabad. His right hip surgery was carried out on August 28 and the left hip surgery was carried out on September 6.

A city-based private hospital has successfully carried out the bilateral hip replacement surgery of the tallest man in India—Dharmendra Pratap Singh—who fell short of just two inches to clinch the world record. A resident of Pratapgarh in Lucknow, Singh's height is 8 feet 1 inch and he was admitted in the hospital with complaints of difficulty in walking and carrying out his daily activities due to arthritic pain in the hip joints since 6 years. A team of four joint replacement surgeons—Ateet Sharma, Amir Sanghavi, Hemang Ambani, and Chirag Patel—which carried out the surgeries told DNA that treating Singh had its own challenges and everything in the hospital, from his bed to the operation theatre table, had to be customised owing to the height of the patient. Also, the implants which were to be used for Singh's surgeries had to be specially ordered and brought from Chennai as they were not of normal size. According to Sharma, a 68 size acetabular cup was used for the right hip and a 70 size cup was used for the left hip, as against the usual size of 52 to 54. Similarly, the femoral stem size required for Singh on the right side was 16 and that on the left size was 23, which was way above the normal size of 11 or 12. EARLIER SURGERIES Singh had undergone 2 surgeries in Lucknow for his fracture in left hip before he was treated in Ahmedabad Singh was admitted on Aug 26, his right hip surgery was carried out on Aug 28 and left hip on Sept 6 "In order to ascertain the size of the implants required for Singh, we had done some 3D printing. The required sizes of the implants were way above normal and not easily available in India. We had to properly plan the pre-operative, operative, and post-operative measures to rule out any complication or mistake," Ambani said. Doctors said the 43-year-old is suffering from acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that develops when the pituitary glands produce too much growth hormone during adulthood. Due to the disorder, bones, especially of hands, feet and face, grow in size along with an abnormal increase in height. Sharma said owing to the poor financial condition of Singh and considering it as a special case, KD Hospital has conducted the surgeries free of cost. The doctor added the surgeries otherwise would have cost Rs 7-8 lakhs. He added that the condition of the patient is stable and the latter is likely to be discharged on Sunday. Earlier, he had undergone two surgeries in Lucknow for his fracture in left hip before he was treated in Ahmedabad. He was admitted on August 26. His right hip surgery was carried out on August 28 and the left hip surgery was carried out on September 6. Meanwhile, Singh said the surgeries have greatly reduced the pain and now he will be able to carry out his daily activities without any trouble.
