Ahmedabad: Diet, exercise key to control type-2 diabetes, say experts

The diabetologists— Banshi Saboo, Sanjeev Phatak, and Dharmendra Panchal, claimed that by following a strict diet and regular exercise, patients can achieve glycemic range (HbA1c) which is at par with non-diabetic persons. "We prescribe a strict diet in which rich sources of carbohydrates like wheat and rice is replaced with rich sources of protein. Apart from this, patients will have to exercise daily for a minimum of one hour in order to burn at least 600 calories. Phatak said: "A strict diet combined with regular exercise and medications over a period of 12 weeks can produce fantastic results. The doctor clarified that following the strict diet and regular exercise at times become difficult for patients having a lack of will power.

Three city-based diabetologists have come up with a study that provides patients with type-2 diabetes to reduce their dependency on medicines by following a diet, which is low on carbohydrate and high on proteins, along with at least one hour of daily exercise. The diabetologists— Banshi Saboo, Sanjeev Phatak, and Dharmendra Panchal, claimed that by following a strict diet and regular exercise, patients can achieve glycemic range (HbA1c) which is at par with non-diabetic persons. They claimed that the solution works best on patients, who have been detected with type-2 diabetes within the last five years. According to the diabetologists, the dependence on insulin can be achieved by restricting the daily calorie intake to 1200-1500 calories. "We prescribe a strict diet in which rich sources of carbohydrates like wheat and rice is replaced with rich sources of protein. For non-vegetarians, animal protein can also work, whereas vegetarians can increase their protein intake by consuming more vegetables, pulses, soybean and milk products," Phatak told DNA. Apart from this, patients will have to exercise daily for a minimum of one hour in order to burn at least 600 calories. Also, patients will have to take the required medications as prescribed to achieve the desired results. Phatak said: "A strict diet combined with regular exercise and medications over a period of 12 weeks can produce fantastic results. We have carried out a study on 904 patients over a period of a one-and-a-half year and found that the measures suggested by us have greatly helped patients in achieving normal blood sugar levels, without having to completely depend upon medications". The doctor clarified that following the strict diet and regular exercise at times become difficult for patients having a lack of will power.
