Swachh Bharat: Littering plunges at Ahmedabad railway station in last four years

  • | Friday | 4th October, 2019

People have become more aware and stopped littering at the city station and in trains. In 2016-17, a total of 8966 cases were lodged and a total of Rs 9.2 lakh worth fine was collected. At the Ahmedabad Railway station, officials had even started fining those people captured littering on CCTV cameras installed at the station. Surveillance is done by officials through CCTV cameras and the people littering on the station are caught and fine by the official. I do agree that people now are littering less on the station due to fear of getting fined.

People have become more aware and stopped littering at the city station and in trains. The Ahmedabad railway division data shows that the collection of cleanliness fine has come down in the past four years due to public awareness. Pradeep Sharma, PRO of Ahmedabad Division said, "In the past four years there has been a huge decrease seen in the number of cases of cleanliness. It's not like our officials have stopped working, passengers have become more aware of the cleanliness and are littering less. People have started using the dustbins and have stopped throwing the garbage on the track." At the Ahmedabad Railway station, officials had even started fining those people captured littering on CCTV cameras installed at the station. Surveillance is done by officials through CCTV cameras and the people littering on the station are caught and fine by the official. Apart from that at each platform officials are been deployed to watch on the suspected people and the people littering on the platform. Hardik Sathwara, Businessman said, "I do believe the cases must have deceased, but you cannot see the cleanliness on the station. I do agree that people now are littering less on the station due to fear of getting fined. But the platforms are still not clean, only main platform 1 is cleaned regularly, while the rest 11 not maintained well."
