For the first time in over 10 months, the district did not record any death due to COVID. The last time this happened was on April 14.

On most days, the district recorded the maximum number of deaths in Gujarat. On May 5, it had recorded around 40 deaths, the highest ever single-day death toll for the Ahmedabad district. Ahmedabad with 92 cases was followed by Surat with 85, Vadodara 87, Rajkot 59.

According to the Gujarat health department’s Covid bulletin yesterday, there are 4,665 active cases in Gujarat. It dropped below 5,000 on January 23. The Covid curve seems to be falling now with 3-4 fresh cases daily in Ahmedabad rural for the past 15 days now.

Shilpa Yadav, Ahmedabad CDHO told the Ahmedabad Mirror, “The total active cases in Ahmedabad district dipped below 2,000 after over four months. The last time the total active cases touched this level was on September 14 when the number was 2,088.”

One of the key reasons for this is the intensive activity by the administration to find the root causes and to intensive surveillance, contact tracing, and isolation of the affected over the past several months.

Yadav added, “We identified major transmission in places like Sanand, Kathvada, and Changodar. Many of these labourers live in Ahmedabad city and rural areas and take the infection to regions. In coordination with CEOs of the company, we tested all of them.”

Rajkot administration has adopted a novel approach whereby the duty of checking people without masks in public places has been provided to solid waste management apart from the police.

“The staff is always on the field and looking out for people who dispose of waste in public places,” said Pankaj Rathod, Rajot MHO.
