No ‘kapda phad’ Holi in Pushkar this year

AJMER: There will be no ‘Kapda Phad’ (clothes tattering) Holi this time in the holy town of Pushkar . The decision was opposed by most of the local people as in last five years; ‘Kapda Phad’ Holi has been the main tourist attraction. The Holi Mandal of Pushkar organises this and only foreign tourists are allowed to participate in it. They also said that such occasions have bad influence on people.Following the talks, superintendent of police Kunwar Rashtradeep banned it to protect the sentiments of locals.The ‘Kapda Phad’ Holi started 10 years ago and is organized at Barah Ghat with loud DJ and dandiya dance. During this festival, the business of local hotels and shops increases.Officials also warned that no trance party will be hosted at the time of Holi.

The police took the decision after holding a meeting with local residents where they termed the celebrations against their religion and culture. They also said that such occasions have bad influence on people.Following the talks, superintendent of police Kunwar Rashtradeep banned it to protect the sentiments of locals.The ‘Kapda Phad’ Holi started 10 years ago and is organized at Barah Ghat with loud DJ and dandiya dance. It starts early morning and tourists enjoy the festival by tearing each other’s clothes in groups. “Almost every hotel is booked during this occasion for around three to four days,” said a hotel owner.Each year, travel agencies invite foreign tourists to take part in the celebrations. The Holi Mandal of Pushkar organises this and only foreign tourists are allowed to participate in it. Last year, around 2,000 foreigners participated in it. During this festival, the business of local hotels and shops increases.Officials also warned that no trance party will be hosted at the time of Holi. The decision was opposed by most of the local people as in last five years; ‘Kapda Phad’ Holi has been the main tourist attraction. The orders brought opposition from many people due to good income from tourism.
