ALLAHABAD: The technique of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy LIBS ) had been of tremendous use when the Indian scientists deciphered the conditions on moon after the Chandrayan mission-I and would continue to be handy in resolving the issues of earth and planetary science, opined head of the department of earth and planetary science of Allahabad University While speaking at the second day of ongoing symposium cum workshop on LIBS, being held at the Department of Physics of AU, Prof Pati also discussed the success of Mars Opportunity's Rower Mission.In the talk delivered by Prof Shiv K Sharma from the University of Hawaii US, the expert explained the application of combined standoff LIBS and Raman Spectroscopy for planetary exploration. Likewise, Prof Soma Venugopal Rao from the University of Hyderabad talked on femtosecond standoff detection technique to utilise concentration of explosive particle through sample collection and further examination.Prof SN Thakur former dean of Banaras Hindu University explained how sounds of light and sounds of gravitational waves can be listen using a laser. LIGO on the basis of collision of two black holes explained the existence of gravitational waves. Prof Thakur also talked about the contribution of Prof S Chandrashekhar for predicting how a star can die into a black hole. He said that if the mass of the star is 1.4 times mass of the Sun it will end as black hole. Our Sun will end up as a white dwarf.Prof Christian Parigger from the University of Tennesse US spoke on the spectroscopy of Laser-induced plasma. He also emphasised the nano LIBS direction to the researchers. In another technical session, Prof Jinesh Jain talked on the identification of groundwater using LIBS and Prof V Palleschi from Italy discussed Nanoparticles 3D mapping and neural network using LIBS.
