Allahabad: Lawyer on way to court shot dead in full public view

ALLAHABAD: In a daring broad daylight murder captured on CCTV, a 45-year-old district court lawyer, Rajesh Srivastava , was shot dead by bike-borne assailants near Manmohan Park crossing in Katra locality in Colonelganj police area on Thursday morning when he was going to attend the court.As the news spread, a huge crowd of local residents including scores of lawyers gathered at the spot seeking immediate arrest of the assailants. The crowd later blocked the road just a stone’s throw away from the office of the district police chief and set a bus on fire.The crowd also blocked vehicular movement on MG Marg and Collectorate road for more than two hours. The lawyer’s family members, who too joined the crowd, declined to hand over his body to the police for post-mortem demanding compensation and immediate arrest of the killers.The police took more than two hours to pacify the protesters and clear the road for traffic.Reports said the assailants shot the lawyer at point blank range in full public view when he was going to the district court on a mobike from his house located in Rambagh. He was rushed to the district hospital were the doctors declared him dead.Incidentally, the killing was executed at around 10 :20am when chief secretary Rajive Kumar and DGP O P Singh had landed in city to review preparations being made for Kumbh-2019.SHO Colonelganj Satyendra Singh said, “A case under sections 302 and 506 of IPC has been lodged at the Colonelganj police station against two unidentified assailants and two others, including Pradeep Jaiswal, owner of a hotel, and Kamal, a nagar nigam employee, in this connection.”“We have detained two persons for questioning and police teams have been dispatched to various places in search of the assailants. We are also scanning the video footage of the entire episode captured in a CCTV installed outside an automobile showroom near the place of the murder,” he added.“Two unidentified bike-borne assailants overtook the lawyer’s bike on way to district court and shot at point blank range, ” said DySP Colonelganj Alok Mishra. He added that the killers managed to escape unchallenged.The victim’s brother Brajesh Kumar Srivastava told the police that he was present in the locality and was a witness to the killing.He said that his brother had petitioned the officials against the hotel owner who was occupying nullah land. Since then the hotel owner had been threatening my brother of dire consequences, he added.Brajesh also named a nagar nigam employee, Kamal, in connection with the killing. “Kamal too had threatened my brother for taking up the issue,” he added.
