SP stage dharna for clean Ganga

ALLAHABAD: Members of the Samajwadi Party launched a massive dharna on the banks of river Ganga at Sangam, on Thursday. The dharna is being staged to pressurize the central government to expedite the schemes promised to make the Ganga clean.Leading the dharna, senior leader of SP and Rajya Sabha MP from the party, Kunwar Reoti Raman Singh said that the party would stage a massive countrywide movement to make the Ganga not only clean but also a river which would have abundant volume of water throughout the year. The members were agitated by the rising price of both petroleum and diesel which is causing hike in prices of various commodities. He said that the government has spent crores of rupees but all have gone in vain as after several decades, the river still cries under sever pollution.Commenting on the government’s ambitious project of ‘namami Gange’, the senior leader of the party said that river Ganga will not become clean till the time abundant volume of water flows in the river. State government have built numerous dams on the river because of which the river has taken shape of a drain, carrying effluent of various cities and factories.Speaking on the occasion, former city president of the party, K K Srivastava said that Ganga servers as lifeline for lakhs of villages habited on its bank and if the river is polluted, we are playing with future of the populace inhabiting these villages.Meanwhile, activists of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha burnt the effigy of the petroleum minister at Union hall of Allahabad University , on Thursday.
