ALLAHABAD: Panic gripped area around the Arts campus of Allahabad University when large number of inmates, belonging to various hostels, indulged in arson and stone pelting, on Tuesday. The inmates are agitated following the orders of the varsity authorities asking them to vacate the hostels within one week’s of time.The orders were passed by the varsity authorities on Monday evening. On Tuesday, as the inmates came to know about the instruction, they started assembling at the union hall. Sensing trouble, soon large number of police personnel too were deployed around the union hall and all the roads approaching towards arts campus of AU.After around an hour of calm protest , things became violent as a group of unidentified youths torched a police jeep and a bike near the Diamond Jubilee hostel . As many as Four shots were also fired from near the hostel to create panic.Soon, police moved into action and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the inmates who ran to various hostels, located near the union hall, to escape from police action. However, police personnel along with PAC jawans, were seen entering deep into the hostel and chasing the trouble makers.Varsity authorities have chalked out an elaborative plan to carry out eviction drive from June 12 onward and all the hostels would be completely evacuated by June 15, similar to last year. Those inmates who have to appear in any exams would be allotted rooms, for the brief period, in any of the three hostels identified by the varsity authorities as summer hostels.
