Violence rocks AU; students torch police jeep and vehicles

ALLAHABAD: Large-scale violence erupted on the Arts campus of Allahabad University on Tuesday when scores of students protesting eviction from hostels fought pitched battles with the police, torched a police jeep and damaged four cars of university employees. Later, they took out a procession under leadership of AU Student Union president Avnish Yadav and reached the VC office to state a protest.Reports said meanwhile one of the student leaders got involved in arguments with a police officer and soon the situation went out of control. Before fire-fighters could douse the flame, both the vehicles were reduced to ashes.Following the arson, police swung into action and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the students, who ran to various hostels located near the Union hall to take shelter. When the police cane-charged the students to disperse them, they assembled at the portico and pelted stones on the police.Although no one was injured in stone pelting, the agitated students damaged several vehicles, including the official car of AU finance officer.In the meanwhile, someone torched a police jeep and a bike parked outside the Union hall. When the police used force, they retaliated and pelted stones.

Colonelganj police has lodged a case against unidentified persons in connection with the violence.Forced on the back foot, the university administration decided to postpone the hostel eviction drive till further orders.The sequence of events started on Monday when AU authorities, citing an Allahabad High Court directive, issued an order asking inmates of all the hostels, both of AU and of trusts, to vacate their rooms by June 11 or face forceful eviction from June 12.On Tuesday, a large number of hostellers and student leaders assembled at the Union hall of the university from where they moved to the offices of chief proctor and dean student welfare. Later, they took out a procession under leadership of AU Student Union president Avnish Yadav and reached the VC office to state a protest.Reports said meanwhile one of the student leaders got involved in arguments with a police officer and soon the situation went out of control.
