Man takes to stealing to foot wife’s poll expenses, arrested

ALLAHABAD: The Pratapgarh police arrested a man along with his two accomplices for executing over 65 thefts to foot his wife’s poll expenses, late on Monday evening.The thief, identified as Panch Lal Verma, targeted the houses of politicians, their relatives, government officers, prominent traders in Pratapgarh district including a close relative of state minister Dr Mahendra Pratap Singh at Karmajeetpur village here, in the limits of Kandhai police station last month, claimed the police.Verma turned into a thief after his wife won gram pradhan election from Madhawa village here in Lalganj block of the Pratapgarh district. SP (city) Pratapgarh, Purnendu Singh told TOI, “Panch Lal Verma’s wife Sangeeta Verma, a resident of Poore Rahman Madhawa in the limits of Lalganj police station, had contested the gram pradhan election and won.”“During interrogation, Panch Lal revealed that he had borrowed around Rs 20-25 lakh from neighbours, relatives and others to cover the expenses for contesting election and also spent money during celebrations after his wife got elected.”Finding no other way to clear his debts, Panch Lal formed a gang and executed more than five dozen thefts and burglaries in past three years in Pratapgarh district and neighbourhood.
